Test Pilot Captain “Mutt” Summers puts the new Supermarine Spitfire prototype through its paces during March 1936.
The small Rolls Royce Merlin-engined fighter was immediately hailed as a thoroughbred with its excellent handling and superb performance. The Spitfire would remain in production throughout the Second World War; its clever design allowing it to be continually modified to meet the evolving needs of the RAF and other Allied operators. It became synonymous with victory in the Battle of Britain and its status as a design legend remains undimmed with the passage of time.
