Known as the 'blonde knight', Erich Hartmann was a young fighter pilot with enormous courage and leadership qualities. As Group Commander of the famous JG-52 Fighter Wing he took pains to train personally the young pilots joining his Wing, and took great pride in having never lost a Wingman throughout his combat career. Awarded Germany's highest military award, the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, Erich Hartmann is a legend amongst fighter pilots. Flying the legendary Messerschmitt Me 109, Hartmann was invincible in the air, achieving his phenomenal success during no fewer than 1400 combat missions, all on the notorious Russian Front. By the end of the war he had amassed a total of 352 aerial victories, a score that is never likely to be surpassed.
