RAF Spitfire Mx IX during the summer of 1944.
From original artwork by Gerard Bernadice, a limited edition of 500 copies that was commissioned by Geoffrey Page in 1977.
The Spitfire depicted, MH434, was delivered to 222 Squadron in 1943 and after a brief spell with 350 and 349 Squadrons finished the war with 9 and a half victories. It spent time with the Dutch and Belgium air forces before being bought by a private UK owner in 1963. In 1968 it was bought by Sir Adrian Squire, Chairman of Cathay Pacific Airways and the Spitfire Society, and we suspect the painting shows the aircraft as it was in the late 1970s-1980s, with D-Day markings and the owners initials as Squadron codes. The aircraft has appeared in many films including The Battle of Britain and A Bridge Too Far. It is now owned by the Old Flying Machine Company and is a regular on the war bird display circuit.
The print was purchased new by its owner who still has the original receipt.
It is accompanied by an A3 factsheet giving biographical information on the signers. It is a little larger than the usual side profile and would look impressive framed.
Overall size: 28 x 17 inches
