North Weald, December 1941 and heavy snow falls have put paid to any operational flying for the day. In between flurries of snow, ground crews work on the Spitfire Mk Vbs of 222 Squadron so they can be ready to go as soon as the weather clears.

Some aircraft are just ‘right’ from their very first flight; the Supermarine Spitfire was one of those. Reginald Mitchell’s aeronautical masterpiece has become a national icon for several generations of Britons and surely many more to come. The quality of the basic design meant the airframe could be continually upgraded throughout World War II to meet the needs of new roles and new enemy threats. For most people however it is the Battle of Britain that the Spitfire will forever symbolize as the heroic ‘Few’ triumphed in the country’s most pivotal time in living memory.

Each print in Stephen Brown's Limited Edition, Spitfire Dawn (Canvas Edition) is signed and numbered by the artist.
