Aviation Art - Valuations for William S Phillips

Without doubt America’s leading aviation artist when it comes to producing prints that sell out and then appreciate on the secondary market. The William Phillips style has always been bold and innovative, particularly so during the 1980’s when he produced exciting images like Thunder In The Canyon and Phantoms And The Wizard, the like of which had not been seen before.

In the mid 1990s Phillips started to experiment with a new approach, based around nostalgic American landscape scenes but with an underlying aviation story.  These may not have impressed the hardened aviation art collectors but some of them have proved very popular, reflected in a rapid appreciation in values.

The passage of time and the general raising of standards overall in the aviation art has tempered prices a little but they are still impressive as our current Top 5 below illustrate.

Evasive Action Over Sagami Bay

Released November 2006

Probably the most significant William Phillips aviation subject released for some time. Signed by veterans of the Doolittle Raid and a small edition size, this print sold out from the publisher straight away and seems likely to appreciate in value quickly.
